Alan Martin

X-Ray Facility Instrument Scientist

University of Strathclyde

Alan is the X-Ray Facility Instrument Scientist in the National Facility and operates and manages a range of 10 X-Ray instruments, 6 XRPD instruments, two single crystal X-Ray diffractometers, one Xenoxs Xeuss 2.0 miniature beamline for small angle X-Ray Scattering (SAXS), and a 500nm pixel resolution CT scanner, as well as managing radiation safety within CMAC as the Departmental Radiation Protection Supervisor.

With a Masters Degree in Chemistry from the University of Glasgow, and a PhD from the University of Bath, Alan graduated in 2013 after spending 5 years in the Wilson research group working with crystal engineering and X-Ray diffraction methods, ranging from small molecule single crystal solution, to cluster analysis of powder X-Ray diffraction data. After a further two years working in industry in the oilfield scale prevention industry, Alan joined CMAC in the Technology and Innovation Centre at Strathclyde University as part of the newly founded National Facility team as the X-Ray technician in 2016.
