Ric Barker is the Associate Principal Scientist for in vitro simulation at AstraZeneca, who is currently based in the Biopharmaceutics unit in at AstraZeneca’s site in Macclesfield, UK. Ric leads AZ’s Global efforts in the advanced in-vitro space, in both the application and development of novel tools and techniques to improve the predictive power of advanced dissolution systems. In his research, he aims to replace in-vivo studies wherever possible, and to speed up the development of new medicines to get them into the hands of patients more quickly.

Ric works closely with both the early phase and late-stage parts of the business to design, develop and deliver bespoke tools, techniques and studies to meet the requirements of the project teams at AZ. Of particular interest to him is the modelling of food effect, disease states and paediatric coping mechanisms to help drive effective and rapid product development.
