Meet our Team: Weiling Wang

This edition of our monthly "Meet Our Team" segment features Weiling Wang, a Research Associate at CMAC.

Originally from the YanLiang District in Xi’An, China, Weiling had long dreamed of exploring life abroad. Her love for chemistry, physics, and biology during her school years laid the groundwork for her future in engineering, a path she pursued at university in China. This path eventually led her to become a physicist while completing her PhD at Lancaster University. Her doctoral research focused on simulating the high-temperature deformation of additive-manufactured metallic materials, a topic closely related to the nuclear industry. Driven by her interest in chemistry and pharmaceuticals, Weiling transitioned to collaborating with experts in these fields, ultimately leading her to work at CMAC.

Weiling’s research primarily focuses on data management and analysis for 3D printable biomaterials. Based at the University of Strathclyde, she collaborates with chemists at the University of Nottingham, which often sees her traveling between the two institutions, as well as to Cambridge and Reading.  Her day-to-day tasks include debugging code, reading research papers, and leading regular online catch-ups with colleagues in Nottingham.

Among her proudest professional achievements, Weiling highlights the full-stack development work on the Dialup project, where she designed and built a database along with a front-end interface—an ambitious feat she accomplished with no prior experience. Her talents extend beyond the theoretical wok, as evidenced by her recognition as a regional winner of a chemistry experiment competition and her adventurous spirit, having skied down the Jungfraujoch, the Top of Europe, not once but twice- a bold challenge she first took on as a beginner and has since embraced with confidence.

Reflecting on her time at CMAC, Weiling shared:

"I enjoy the diversity, flexibility, and daily challenges that push me to grow. It’s incredibly rewarding to work in such a dynamic environment, and I find joy not only in outdoor adventures but also in the work itself."

Outside of work, Weiling’s interests are as diverse as her professional background. She participates in a wide range of activities, spanning from baking, cooking, solving jigsaw puzzles, playing chess, crocheting, reading, and playing piano, to skiing, mountain biking, and hiking. She describes her idea of a perfect weekend as camping trip somewhere in the Highlands and going on a big hike. She is deeply interested in astrology and spends time reading about it. She is also into Japanese detective fiction. Recently, she’s been watching the show “A Man on the Inside”, which reminds her of the engaging mystery she found in “The Thursday Murder Club”.

Weiling’s dedication, creativity, and adventurous spirit make her a valued member of the CMAC team, and we’re proud to celebrate her contributions to our community.
